The Pool Construction Process

The heart of St. John Pools is the construction process. This is where we take your dream plans to reality. Each project is unique. This is a general outline of the steps we need to take to get your pool built. Along the way Sean and Justin will be continually monitoring the progress.

Locating Utilities and the Layout

Before we do anything, we will make sure that all utilities are located on your property. If utilities are in the pool area we will discuss options. We will then mark with paint and stakes to the design specifications. If you desire any changes to the plans – this is the time to do it.

Pool Excavation

Our excavator will bring the heavy equipment – dump trucks and front end loaders to remove the dirt. Usually a one day process the basic forming of the pool will be done. Please note that your backyard is now a construction zone. Please be careful! Your pool shape will be complete.

Pool Plumbing and Steel

Our plumber will start running all of the pipe from the pool to your equipment. Your plumbing will be put under pressure to make sure all connections are sound. The steel will be installed to create the “cage”. Rebar will be hand bent to every contour of your pool. The rebar will be tied together and spaced for added strength to the shell that is to come. This step can take 1-4 days depending on permitting that may be required in your area.

Our gunite crew will arrive with a specialty pneumatic system that pumps the gunite. Gunite has been around for over 100 years. The process is tried and true – allowing a minimum compressive strength of over 400 psi after the concrete has fully cures. This allows our gunite crew to apply the concrete evenly and follow your design precisely. The gunite “shoot” takes one day. You will have to help us cure the gunite properly by watering the gunite 2-3 times a day for the next 10 days.

Pool Electric

St. John Pools electrician will connect all electrical products (lights, pumps, UV systems, etc.) strictly following the manufacturer’s guidelines and following all applicable codes. This usually takes 1-2 days.

Pool Decking

This is your outdoor living space and will be customized to your specifications. Pavers, concrete, acrylic decking and stamped concrete are just some of the options. This can take 1-4 days

Tile, Coping and Water Features

Coping is the “cap” that sits on top of the pool “beam”. The sooner you make your tile and coping selections the quicker we can finish this step. We will help you make your selection based on availability and cost. During this stage we will install your selections. We will also create water features you may have selected. Anything from sheers to waterfalls to decorative waterfalls. This can take 1-4 days.

Interior finish

This is the last step of construction. Your selection will be hand applied to the gunite to finish off the look you’ve been waiting for! Once the interior is finished you’ll be filling your pool. Our interior finishes are designed to “cure” underwater. We will start your filtration equipment and get your water moving.  We will also come by and give you a “lesson” on maintaining your pool – it’s not that hard. Of course, we will still be here to answer any questions you may have.
